Flexo Sustainable : Summer 2014
• Accredo is a registered member of the EPA’s Green Power Part- nership and the Organic Trade Association EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER The printer, its products and its operating practices—focusing on people, planet and profit—took top accolades in the category of Sustainability Programs in FTA’s newly minted 2014 Sustainability Excellence Awards competition. The achievement caused several of its contemporaries to take notice. “The FTA Sustainability Excellence Award program clearly illustrates that flexographic printers and suppliers have integrated environmen- tally conscious manufacturing methods into the very core of their businesses,” commented Judge Marygrace Quigley of Label Technol- ogy in Merced, CA. “I applaud the work. Accredo has made sustain- ability the backbone of the company.” A similar assessment was offered by Judge Dolores Corcoran, pro- ductivity system manager of Lauterbach Group, Inc. in Sussex, WI. “In aligning with forward thinking innovations that drive sustainable practices into process management and product life cycles, Accre- do embodies sustainability throughout the business model clearly demonstrating an exceptional, unprecedented sustainable program.” Judge Lori Ashford of robbie fantastic flexibles in Lenexa, KS noted, “Accredo’s commitment to sustainability from facility design through operations and materials is truly impressive.” PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE According to Cohn, “Accredo Packaging remains committed to reducing the environmental impacts of its packaging and extruded film production, while offering competitively priced products to its customers. Future plans include an expansion of its production facilities, with construction on a second site to be built to meet LEED requirements and to be powered by 100 percent renewable energy.” This year, it is studying the potential to generate a profitable recycle stream for mixed paper recyclable material—corrugated containers, cores, roll cradles, corner boards, newspapers, office paper, shredded paper, magazines, telephone books, catalogs and other junk mail. By implementing this program, Cohn maintained, Accredo will be demonstrating its premise of “Sustainability in Action.” Specifically: • Generating additional revenue • Reducing waste to landfill • Not paying for transport of waste to landfill • Fulfilling the requirement for Sustainable Green Printing Part- nership (SGP) certification to conduct a project on sustainability • Requiring the contractor to provide appropriate bins in strategic locations at the factory and offices (located at the factory) for the collection of permitted co mingled recyclable waste: » #1 PET drink bottles » #2 HDPE bottles/containers » Aluminum cans » Steel cans » Mixed paper waste “From the outset, the company envisioned a new flexible packaging division that would embody the principles of business, social and environmental sustainability,” Cohn reported. “Accredo Packaging has integrated sustainability into every aspect of its business model.” Statistics cited by Cohn serve as a testament to Accredo’s achieve- ments. By using renewable energy, this printer eliminated equivalent CO2 emissions from more than 34,000 barrels of oil consumed; avoided the carbon dioxide emissions of more than 3,000 passenger vehicles each year and saved the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power nearly 2,000 average American homes annually. n Zippered stand up pouches made from components that are certified compostable Tandem team: Accredo Packaging’s flexo press and blown film extruder utilize state of the art proprietary delivery systems in achieving precise registration, color accuracy and producing compostable packaging from renewable feedstock. 6 Sustainable FLEXO | SUMMER 2014
