Identifying, Implementing, Improving Finding Ways to Increase Efficiency at PaperWorks In order to implement and integrate various sustainable busi- ness practices throughout its operations, FTA member Paper- Works has put in place a number of principles. They are: • Adopt sustainability criteria and metrics into facility pro- cess improvement and productivity, as applicable • Reduce energy usage, water consumption and green- house gas emissions through the integration of energy efficiency and pollution prevention programs • Encourage suppliers and contractors to adopt sound environmental management practices • Provide for and support employees toward the develop- ment of an accident and injury free workplace • Work with customers to develop solutions that minimize the impact and maximize the benefit to individuals and communities throughout the lifecycle of their packaging • Support forestry certification processes like Sustainability Forestry Initiative (SFI), Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) and Forestry Stew- ardship Council (FSC) • Educate employees on sustainability • Engage with stakeholders and communities to ensure an understanding of values and collaborative work toward maximizing the positive impact they can make together WORKING TOGETHER PaperWorks’ partnerships “strive to provide the best for [its employees and their families, customers, communities, stake- holders and industry peers,” as described in its sustainability report. Some of its partnerships include: • Working with the U.S. government’s Better Buildings, Better Plants program, which has helped meet a pledge to reduc energy intensity by 25 percent in 10 years • Along with its competitors, developing an industry wide sustainability program working to drive performance throughout • Decreasing recorded safety incidents through a “corpo- rate mandate to a focus on collective responsibility ” For example, PaperWorks’ work with BioBag, which pro- duces and markets bio based products for several indus- tries, has benefitted both companies by analyzing retailer scorecards, advising on eco logos and promoting new mate- rials. Recently, the pair created a 100 percent compostable and recyclable package. ENVIRONMENTAL A concern for the environment is a staple of any company ’s sustainability initiative and PaperWorks is no different. It uses a series of practices to place this concern front and center: • Maintain on time compliance with all permits, reports and information requests from regulators • Encourage development and manufacturing processes that do not adversely affect the environment, including: Developing and improving operations and technolo- gies to minimize waste Preventing air, water and ground pollution Minimizing health and safety risks Disposing of waste safely and responsibly When We Come Together, 2012 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 4 Sustainable FLEXO YEAR END 2013 www.flexomag.com
