And although we have a long track record of taking the right steps and measures – as you will see through our Mission and Guiding principles – we have, over the last three years, started to take a more formal approach in the way we coordinate our sustainability efforts, track progress and report on activities in this area, resulting in this sustainability report. When tracing the evolution of sustainability throughout our organisation, it is important to first understand where Flint Group has come from to arrive at this point. In 2004 CVC formed XSYS, a merger of the Akzo Nobel Pigments, Inks and Plate divisions with theBASFinkdivisions. Within a year Flint Ink was also acquired and Flint Group was born (2005). In 2007 Day International was acquired and the basis of what is, today, Flint Group was truly established. Initially all the separate parts of the company continued with their established sound and solid processes in regards to sustainability, but by the end of 2007 a “One Flint Group” approach was introduced, covering many aspects of our business – including sustainability. This process was governed by the introduction of Flint Group’s Mission and Guiding principles. The Mission and Guiding principles provide a strong framework for how we conduct our business, how we make our management decisions, our customer and employee focus, and how we strive for teamwork and integrity, as well as our continuous improvement ethos. Supporting the Mission and Guiding principles, Flint Group had, from its formation, a well-developed Code of Conduct with a strong annual sign-off process confirming that our principles are being complied with. In addition, Flint Group had also developed an internal audit process and team that would not be out of place in many public companies. All these elements together, with additional further developments such as our work on People Development, our Integrity Assurance Policy and our Risk and Compliance Committee, have provided Flint Group with a solid foundation for the overall sustainability agenda. Early in 2011, the decision was taken to move to the next stage and we started to develop a more focused and detailed Sustainability Statement, Policy andFramework. We incorporatedtheUNGlobal Compact as our base principles and have used the strong reporting structure of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) as our basis for reporting. The preparation work was ready in April 2012 when we published our Flint Group sustainability approach, followed by our first (internal) sustainability report at the end of 2012. Combining the Mission and Guidingprinciples with the four elements of the UN Global Compact (Anti-corruption, Labour, Human Rights and Environmental) with the three reporting “headings” of the DJSI (Economic, Social and Environment), we have created the Sustainability Wheel of Flint Group. As our framework is built on the strong foundation of the Mission and Guiding principles, we have created a continuum that allows us to develop our programme on the continuous improvements that are such a part of the genes of our company. This first external sustainability report is therefore a milestone for Flint Group and it covers our progress within the sustainability agenda up to and including 2012: continuous improvement, evolution rather than revolution, sustainable in all aspects. It is a programme that is built in the tradition of FlintGroup, “no nonsense”, based on the principle “We say what we do and we do what we say”.
