through the certification process. In addition, FTA members receive a significant discount on SGP program fees. RECENT CERTIFICATIONS One of the most recent facilities to be certified was FTA member Starflex Packaging in Pointe-Aux-Trembles, Quebec. Starflex is a production facility of Polystar & Business Partners. At the time this article was written, Sustainable FLEXO was notified that FTA member The Robinette Co. , Bristol, TN became the tenth flexo facility and 52nd plant to become SGP certified. GREENER SUPPLY CHAIN In 2012, SGP facilitated a Print Buyers SGP Awareness Survey. Results indicated that 25 percent of corporate print buyers would preference buying from an SGP certified facility, and an amazing 70 percent said they would like to know more about SGP. Recently, print buyers like Starbucks and Delhaize America have sought out SGP facilities in their quest to green their supply chain. Some FTA members have generated new work because of their SGP certifications. Other companies, including PepsiCo and Kraft Foods have approached SGP to learn more about the program. Hasbro continues to demon- strate its leadership in sustain- ability with its in-plant facility recently becoming recertified by SGP in 2010. Lou Liotta, director of studio services, Acosta Marketing (clients include Campbell’s , ConAgra, Heinz, Hormel, Dr. Pepper, Giant, Kellogg’s , Morton, Ocean Spray, Perdue, Safeway, Walmart, and Whole Foods) comments, “Our clients are looking for green suppliers. SGP Certified printers make it easy.” SGP SUPPORT Among the FTA members supporting SGP are platinum patron 3M; gold patrons DuPont and Durst; and silver patrons Harper Corporation of America, INX International Ink Co. , MacDermid Printing Solutions, Prisco and xpedx, along with new silver patron, Flint Group. SGP certification serves as a public commitment to com- prehensive sustainability for a printing facility. The program provides a certification label for companies to showcase their commitment to sustainability based on a comprehensive review of their entire operation including material inputs, their manufacturing process, and their facility. Achieving SGP cer- tification not only provides an advantage for the business but also provides opportunities for facilities to save money and reduce material usage and waste. FTA continues to support the SGP program and assists members going through the certification process. If you’d like to learn more, contact Doreen Monteleone, FTA director of EHS & special projects and SGP board member at firstname.lastname@example.org. n FTA recently formed the FTA-SGP Mentoring Program to help new SGP applicants through the certification process. Experienced FTA members that are already SGP certified have agreed to counsel other flexo- graphic printers. This peer-to-peer relationship will be a valuable resource — to have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss topics with someone who has already gone through certification. If anyone would like to participate in this program, please contact Doreen Monteleone at email@example.com. www.flexomag.com earth day 2013 Sustainable FLEXO 5
