Flexo Sustainable : Year-End 2012
sibility to the environment is on display through its innovative sustainability practices. PaperWorks' operates a "flexible, vertically integrated system of facilities" including nine packaging converting facilities; two sales and design centers; five sheeting facilities; two CRB mills; and two external warehouses. This network provides PaperWorks' with a number of benefits including, the ability to serve customers throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico; flexibility in managing freight costs; rapid turnaround; and prime proximity to customer converting facilities that further reduces costs. The company's 2010-2011 sustainability report is the first one of its kind for PaperWorks. The précis' primary aim is to provide adequate context and measure the firm's perfor- mance against its goals and objectives. PaperWorks' is able to gather the necessary data through "'real-time' sustain- ability tracking software," which it uses to push continuous improvement. The report was assembled according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. One major sustainability effort being made by PaperWorks is designing packaging that is more readily and easily recy- clable. One such example is the HolobriteTM process applied to Proctor & Gamble's Crest toothpaste box. This innovative packaging process reflects and refracts light similar to holo- graphic PET laminated board but drops the package weight by an estimated 6 percent. The savings on shipping alone has led to a 9.5 percent decrease in overall carbon emission. Furthermore, contrasting paperboard cartons made with polyester film lamination, the entire carton is recyclable.
