Flexo Sustainable : Year-End 2012
Packaging’s Performance Indicators Sustainability & Security Predicted to Surpass Cost as Primary Business Drivers in Next Decade Cost, convenience and shelf appeal may be driving most consumer packaging decisions today, but dynamics are changing. Latest research reveals that sustainability, safety and security concerns will soon surpass long-standing priorities and sit prominently atop the list of business builders. The shift will take place in the coming 10 years. Word of the development is conveyed in findings from a DuPont Packaging and Polymers sanctioned online survey, completed in late summer. It captured insights from con- sumer goods manufacturers and converters in marketing and packaging development roles. The sample audience num- bered nearly 500. Food, healthcare and beverage markets ranked highest in representation, but nearly every industry that uses packaging was embodied. Two thirds of respondents hailed from Europe, with the remaining located in North America. The survey was conducted in cooperation with Packaging World magazine. TODAY VS. TOMORROW Analysts poured over the data collected and concluded that, today, 75 percent of poll takers said cost matters when it comes to evaluating sustainability in packaging. By 2022, they project cost will fall from first to third on the list of most important criteria. Forty-one percent of those surveyed ranked it number one; but 52 percent preferred lifecycle analysis and 46 percent selected recyclability of the package. Similarly, when looking 10 years out, 40 percent of those questioned, indicated that the source of raw materials will become increasingly important. In 2012 only 20 percent of the audience rated that factor as highly significant. 2 Sustainable FLEXO year eND 2012 www.flexomag.com
