Flexo Sustainable : Winter 2008
direct and measurable improvements in members’ environmental footprint can be attained. The packaging working group is comprised of a diverse group of CPCs that have corporate responsibility for environmental sustainability related to the packaging aspects of their products. The group has achieved several of its initial goals, including: 1. Learn from each other on the best way to meet the challenges of impacting sustainability goals; 2. Evaluate common metrics and gain an understanding of current environmental impacts explicit to packaging; 3. Develop a constructive dialogue with various thought-leaders on the subject of sustainable packaging. The working group has made a recommendation that companies consider an adoptive, rather than a re-inventing approach. Many of the goals, principles and metrics being developed by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) outline a path to members, and the consumer goods industry, striving to advance packaging sustainability goals. The working group believes that incorporation of the SPC approach has great value as part of GMA’s comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability. Current GMA members have already offered broad support to the SPC Initiative. The group also proposes GMA should develop a formal link with SPC that will promote common use of packaging metrics, consistent industry education regarding sustainable packaging, and further allow for best practice sharing. A potential next challenge for the working group is to develop an industryshared strategy to enable members to support the further development of recycling infrastructures and promotion of programs to increase recycled content collection. n Kevin Mathews Director, Health and Environmental Affairs Nestlé Waters North America James McKeown Director of Environmental Services Weston Foods Inc.
