Flexo Sustainable : Winter 2015
Caring For The Planet Walle Corp. Thinks Green, Earns SGP Certification W hat’s in a name? In the 2008 Disney Pixar movie Wall•E, a tiny, adorable robot spends his days cleaning an abandoned Earth, while its former denizens live life on a gigantic spaceship, waiting for their home planet to be deemed fit for recolonizing. In the real world, there is FTA member Walle Corp., the Alpharetta, GA based printer that has been minimizing its environmental foot- print since long before that robot was busy sorting trash. “More than 20 years ago, Walle went green by recycling all trim waste and formulating its own water based inks,” the company reveals on its website. “ Today we are extending our eco friendly efforts by utilizing solventless laminating adhesives and solvent free printing plates.” In addition to those present day efforts, the company recently received Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP) certification. Company President and CEO Sean Keeney talks about Walle’s green mission and why it matters to focus on the environment. FLEXO: How does it feel to have achieved SGP certification? Sean Keeney : We are very proud of achieving SGP certification, es- pecially being the first SGP certified printer that is focused exclusively on label packaging. FLEXO: When did you begin your quest for SGP certification? Keeney : We began the process of pursuing SGP certification more than two years ago. Though we were following most of the best practices identified by the SGP criteria, we needed to document our processes in more detail as they related to sustainability benefits. FLEXO: Was this your first foray into sustainability, or does your company have sustainability focused measures already in place? Keeney: Being a leader within the local business community has always been a part of our DNA. So long before sustainability was a buzzword, we were selecting printing equipment, suppliers and pro- cesses that minimized our impact on the local environment. FLEXO: Why did you seek out SGP certification? “Long before sustainability was a buzzword, we were selecting printing equipment, suppliers and processes that minimized our impact on the local environment. ” 6 Sustainable FLEXO | WINTER 2015
