Flexo Sustainable : Winter 2015
Keeping It Green Specialty Printing’s SGP Certification Continues Sustainability Quest F TA member Specialty Printing has placed an emphasis on sustainability for years, accord- ing to Vice President of Operations Francis Poirier and Quality Engineer David Kopy. But in reality, any printer can claim it has concerns about the environment. Rather than simply deliver empty promises to its customers, the company choos- es to prove these claims. It does this by being ISO 9001:2008 Certified and, recently, achieving Sustain- able Green Printing Partnership (SGP certification). “Specialty Printing has been aggressively focused on sustainability for several years,” note Poirier and Kopy. “We decided to become involved with SGP to demonstrate how serious we are about sustainability and bring some legitimacy to our sustainability program.” Here, the pair discuss their road to SGP certification and why Special- ty Printing puts a heavy emphasis on its environmental impact. FLEXO: How does it feel to have achieved SGP certification? Francis Poirier and David Kopy: SGP Certification gives us recogni- tion as an environmentally friendly company with proactive resource conservation efforts. FLEXO: When did you begin your quest for SGP certification? Poirier and Kopy: We originally contacted SGP for a GAP audit in March 2013 and the audit was conducted in June 2013. We utilized all the recommendations from the audit to develop CAR’s and PAR’s that were subsequently executed by May 2014. We then scheduled our Certification audit for Sept. 29 and 30, 2014. Our formal recommen- dation for SGP Certification was sent to us Oct. 6, 2014. FLEXO: Was this your first foray into sustainability, or does your company have sustainability focused measures already in place? Poirier and Kopy: Specialty Printing has been aggressively focused on sustainability for several years. We decided to become involved with SGP to demonstrate how serious we are about sustainability and bring some legitimacy to our sustainability program. We are ISO 9001:2008 certified and have a comprehensive quality system, which satisfies the most stringent customer requirements. FLEXO: Why did you seek out SGP certification? Poirier and Kopy: The SGP Partnership is the perfect vehicle for us to learn and share best practices with others in our industry. FLEXO: Why is sustainability important to your company? “Specialty Printing is committed to protecting the environment through source reduction, providing alternative structures that use thinner materials while satisfying customer requirements, and using post consumer recycled materials whenever possible. ” 4 Sustainable FLEXO | WINTER 2015
