Flexo Sustainable : Fall 2014
Sustainability, From Mars To Earth W hen your company sells as many products as Mars does, from pet food to candy, coffee to rice, the opportunity for sustainability is massive. The company’s history begins in 1882, when its namesake Frank C. Mars was born in Hancock, MN. In the 132 years since, Mars has grown to carry brands known around the world. It’s five principles, all which can be tied to sustainability, include: • Quality • Responsibility • Mutuality • Efficiency • Freedom “Quality packaging is critical for our products to travel from factory to store to home. It prevents food from spoiling, enables efficient trans- port, identifies our brands and gives consumers important informa- tion,” Mars states in an area of its website dedicated to sustainability. “But packaging also uses materials such as metal, paper and plastics, and creates waste for disposal. We need to find ways to protect our products while preserving resources, reducing the greenhouse gases created when making and transporting packaging, and limiting the amount that ultimately ends up in a landfill.” SHORT & LONG TERM GOALS To that end, the company outlines three key strategies it has been pursuing in an effort to achieve these goals: • Reduce packaging material use • Increase recycled content of packaging • Increase recyclability of packaging FALL 2014 | Sustainable FLEXO 7 MARS IN A MOMENT © 2014Mars, Incorporated anditsAffiliates.
